Buddy Ardd: There is a lot of muddled thinking in the writings of existential philosophers. Their thought ultima! tely comes down to this: We ourselves are living in a gigantic universe that is utterly indifferent to our existence. This means that we have no choice but to muddle our way through life realizing that ultimately anything we do is absurd. In other words, "we are condemned to be free," as Sartre said. But our freedom is meaningless and anything we do with it will eventually produce tragic results. Sartre's thinking was heavily influenced by the violence of World War II. During that time he served in the French Resistance. Kurt Vonnegut, the American writer, was also heavily influenced by World War II the way Sartre was. Through pure chance, he came through a lot of very violent military action completely uninjured. He was a prisoner of war in Dresden, Germany, a very beautiful medieval city, when the allies destroyed it through fire bombing even though there was no military necessity for doing this. This experience was very important in forming his world view and pervades hi! s writings. Like Mark Twain, he eventually became very pessimi! stic about the human prospect and died hating civilization. Harleigh Kyson Jr....Show more

Raul Lushbaugh: semantically, it's the love of wisdom. this is as uncomplicated as one can go giving a definition of philosophy.to me personally, it's the reification of imagination.
