What is "humanities" anyway?

Octavio Roylance: Subjects relating to the study of people, their existence, ideas and interactions. They are distinct from empirical subjects that are based on experiments, observations and analysis of such data such as mathematics, the natural sciences (physics, biology, chemistry, etc) and social sciences (economics, political science, etc.). Humanities subjects include, history, philosophy, languages, literature, theology.

Claudio Drullard: Humanities are the study of the products of human cultures: literature, art, music, philosophy, and history. History seems to be somewhat out of pla! ce in the group, but not only is it record of the events of the various cultures, it is itself a product of historians and, thus, a product of the historian's culture. Historians shape history much like a sculptor shapes marble: by paring away all he/she does not want to include and expressing an artistic interpretation with what remains--it is a creative endeavor, as are the other humanities.
