Why should higher education be subsidized with taxpayer money?

I do receive Pell Grants, but I also need student loans, you have to pay back loans. Once I receive my degree I will begin to pay my loans back. But that doesn't mean we should fund all higher education with taxpayer money, when most of it has no economic value whatsoever. Most liberal arts degree are simply not worth the debt. This is an unavoidable conclusion.
