Why should higher education be subsidized with taxpayer money?

Damaris Weiler: Liberals just don't understand that their plans work pretty well at first, but eventually you run out of other people's money.

Erica Bottaro: The entire nation benefits from an educated populace.Everything that can be assembled, and everything that can be repaired (including your body and teeth) and all those trades that do that work are taught using visual aids supplied by liberal arts majors. The contemporary liberal arts comprise studying literature, languages, philosophy, history, mathematics, and science. 20 Lucrative Careers You Can Get with a Liberal Arts Degreehttp://www.businesspundit.com/20-lucrative-careers...So you're trying to tell us that all of that is unnecessary? You think we should go back to living in caves? ##...Show more

Gabriel Realmuto: @ iris There is no justification for spending taxpayer money on liberal arts degrees, with the exception of math and science BA degrees.

Stephnie Patout: and provide NO avenue for t! he middle class to even stay middle classAmerica needs more ways for people to progress not less

Aron Ramu: It shouldn't be. It causes prices to rise and encourages people who maybe shouldn't go to college to do so thus wasting money when they fail to complete their studies. We have shortages in teh skileld tardes and I can't help but wonder what impact the insistance that all attend college has on this. There are plenty of good paying jobs that do not require a college degree if people learn the skills necessary....Show more

Terresa Tsasie: It's done to help smart people learn stuff that the dumb people can't understand.

Joeann Hoyt: @ momma I agree to some extent. The only degrees that should be subsidized are STEM degrees; there is no economic justification for using taxpayer money to pay for liberal arts degree.

Jeremy Donohue: many Collages estimate that by the yr 2025 there will be over 20 MILLION High tech job openings in THE U.S.A. without ! Collage Grads to fill them, This means that the Co.s who NEED ! these workers will Either lobby for more H-1-2-3-4-5-6=-6-7-8-9-10............Visa programs to import workers from China India, Etc Etc, or Just Move their Co.s to where the workers are. Giving out Collage Loans, and The KEY WORD HERE IS ** LOANS ** will keep the Work In AMERICA for AMERICANS, thus increasing our Tax Revenue, Boosting The Living Crap out of our economy and having an Highly educated work force just makes Good economic sense,.....Show more

Fred Caminita: An educated population is less likely to be violent, bigoted, bogged down in religious nonsense. But perhaps the nation would be better off if slavery was brought back. And them Latino fruit pickers! What gives them the right to food?Hell, DOWN WITH SPELLIN!...Show more

Valentine Michaud: It shouldn't for those degrees. But we do need to subsidize biologists, chemists, engineers, etc. Otherwise, we are going to fall further and further behind other countries at having the people we need to wor! k in new industries, which means they won't bother coming here.

Debora Soliani: Positive externalities, not all government spending is bad.Edit: If you want less ppl to live off the gov. it's a good idea to provide some avenues for them to do so. I do receive Pell Grants, but I also need student loans, you have to pay back loans. Once I receive my degree I will begin to pay my loans back. Once I graduate I will be teaching the children of this nation, effectively improving the nation (hopefully). You should focus more on spending that does little to no good for the country, or even harms the country as a whole....Show more

Carolynn Testani: @ Freedom That dichotomy isn't true at all. Many people who went to college make minimum wage, and many people who didn't go to college make a very comfortable living.

Jill Thomer: David;Agreed, government supported college loans are the reason for the escalating cost of college.More students require more class roo! ms, and teachers. Ditto health care expenses.

Lue Podewils: For t! he same reason education through high school is subsidized.Do you think that you should be the final voice about who gets educated about what?

Alden Sabio: The more kids can be fed to colleges - which are all about money making and not real education - the less impact on the unemployment numbers. Why subsidize higher education when it results in degrees that don't guarantee jobs especially in a dwindling economy.Liberal Arts degrees are part of the problem as they are a cop out. We need students with real degrees in the sciences and engineering....Show more

Renita Sefton: I'm with you on this one...some kids don't have what it takes to get through college and earn a meaningful degree that will contribute to society. Like Judge Smales said in Caddyshack, "The world needs ditchdiggers too."Sorry but I have to comment on the guy Pagan who answered. The guy is answering a question about college degrees and can't spell C-O-L-L-E-G-E. What a riot....Show more

H! ope Lundmark: @ Brian You're right.

Andra Oger: @ Max Hoopla Ultimately people can go to college and study whatever they want. But that doesn't mean we should fund all higher education with taxpayer money, when most of it has no economic value whatsoever. Most liberal arts degree are simply not worth the debt. This is an unavoidable conclusion.

Buster Buchko: You mean Associate Degrees. They are a prerequisite for higher degrees. Hello? In what way do you mean subsidized? Some examples to explain what you're talking about would be nice.

Rosella Figliola: It is a choice.Either it is higher education or welefare. Ater losing 78 million jobs in the last four years we know there aint no stinking jobs out there so they pay us to go to college or they pay us to party at home. Either way we PARTY ON.
